TAW VALLEY MICROGREENS
PLANET-FRIENDLY FRESH AND FLAVOURFUL SUPERFOODS GROWING LOCALLY FOR YOU
Our mission is to produce and supply the freshest most nutritious mini leafy greens using sustainable energy and regenerative farming practices that don’t cost the earth. Almost ninety percent of the waste produced on our micro farm is compostable and reused in our strawberry hothouse, veggie patch and garden beds. or simply left to grow wild and free in the surrounding meadows, adding vital nutrients to the soil and increasing bio-diversity.
WHAT ARE MICROGREENS?
Microgreens are very young, tender stems and first leaves that form within days of a seed germinating. Harvested only 7-10 days after sowing, they are nutrient-rich, incredibly flavoursome, easily digestible and considered a functional food.

Where it all began…
Our Story
When adversity shows up it’s always an invitation to get creative! During the lock down of 2020 mother and daughter team, Elizabeth and Cassandra started looking for ways to meet emerging challenges, to be part of the solution of future fresh food security and the long term health of the family and the local community.
Cassandra’s son, living in South Africa, suggested they use the existing facilities of the 16th century farm, and family home in North Devon, to produce trendy microgreens. The concept was intriguing and within months a plan had taken form and Taw Valley Microgreens was born. These tender young crops lend themselves to urban and vertical farm cultivation and since the early 1990’s the industry has spread across the world in major city centres supplying executive and celebrity chefs with microgreens.
The more we researched the more determined we became that our crops needed to be nourished and cultivated in ways that are regenerative and sustainable. An abundance of fresh air, light and good quality water plus the space to expand the business over time were the positive factors we had at our fingertips. Our sustainability goal was realised through a funding grant from the governments Levelling Up initiative in 2022 enabling the installation of solar panels and an experimental heat stack system. Subsequently we received recognition for our efforts by becoming one of the first recipients of a gold award for the annual Food Drink Devon Sustainability Pioneer Award in 2024

Putting all this into practice has been the toughest learning curve. These tiny crops are fragile and temperamental and any extremes play havoc with their growth. They require vigilant round the clock care, not unlike babies and it seems these tiny leafy greens are a sought after food source with the local non humans (smaller mammals) who share our valley. Harming the wildlife was never an option and a holistic soft approach to managing the challenges is what we explored. We, the team do not fit the average start up / founder profile but we do have 80 years combined lived experience to draw on.
Since finding and buying the 5 acre property almost 20 years back the dream was to restore balance and allow space for nature. From wildflower meadows to an ancient woodland and a mini wetland that once served as a natural flood defence system the land is slowly transforming into a sanctuary for a bio-diverse ecosystem. One of our biggest wins is the return of the apex predators from a family of Buzzards who have made the tall beech trees their home to the bold and brazen weasels and stoats who patrol the polytunnels after dark and the magnificent black and silver adder snake lording over the compost bins our small invaders have all but disappeared and our micro crops are safe and sound without us having to use deathly traps or poisons!
Producing fresh healthy vibrant greens using vertical and controlled environment farming practises means we could farm intensively without encroaching on the space nature needs to maintain our delicate macro eco-systems. This is a microcosm of what nature friendly farming looks like and we feel passionately about sharing our organically grown produce with local communities. Our memberships of the UNESCO North Devon Biosphere, Nature Friendly Farming Network has helped fine tune our mission and establish core values that supply a road map for our development and growth.
We love sharing all the health benefits we’ve experienced by adding microgreens to our diet. From the way we incorporate them in our meals to the fresh veggie juice we’ve become seriously reliant on for vitality and wellbeing. The next stage is to sell more, and to do this we need to become more accessible to our customers and get out there. So come join our growing Taw Tribe today!
