TAW VALLEY MICROGREENS

PLANET-FRIENDLY FRESH AND FLAVOURFUL SUPERFOODS GROWING LOCALLY FOR YOU

Our mission is to provide a year round supply of fresh highly nutritious mini leafy greens using sustainable energy and regenerative farming practices that don't cost the Earth. Up to ninety percent of the waste produced on our micro farm is compostable and used in our thermal heat stack or simply left to grow wild and free, adding vital nutrients to the soil and increasing bio-diversity on the surrounding land.

WHAT ARE MICROGREENS?

Microgreens are very young, tender stems and leaves that form within days of a seed germinating. Harvested only 7-10 days after sowing, they are nutrient-rich, incredibly flavoursome, easily digestible and considered a functional food. They differ from sprouts because only the leafy tender stems are eaten, not the root. Beyond selling our produce, we wish to share the amazing nutritional value these tender young veggies offer, and inspire people to enjoy a wider diversity of foods in their diets.

TAW RAW JUICE

Introducing our Taw Raw Veg Juice Bundle – a powerhouse of natural goodness designed to invigorate your senses and revitalise your body!

Taw Raw Juice is available in bundles of either three recyclable plastic 150ml bottles or four 150ml bottles. For local customers we offer the option of reusable glass bottles on a return and recycle basis. There is an additional handling fee /deposit of £3.00 for this option.

Our super fresh raw juice range is carefully crafted to ensure the optimal delivery of bio-available nutrients where fresh is best. This does mean that the shelf life is just four days and an open bottle must be consumed within 24 hours of opening.

Our Oscar Juicers are the very best brand for wheatgrass juicing on the market ensuring a most gentle extracting process that masticates the fibres, squeezing and cold pressing the juice from the grass, the veggies and fruit. This process preserves the molecular enzymes ensuring a ‘living’ juice full of the highest bio-nutrients to support your vitality.

Flavour varieties include:

  • Green ‘summer’ blend veg juice includes wheatgrass, green apple, mint and lime with an optional chunk of ginger for cooler months
  • Red ‘winter’ blend veg juice includes wheatgrass beetroot carrot ginger and lemon.
  • Pink ‘spring’ flavour is a fruity blend made with apple pineapple ginger and lemon with a hint of beetroot to delight the eyes as well as the taste buds.

Where it all began...

Our Story

When adversity shows up it’s always an invitation to get creative!  During the lock down of 2020 mother and daughter Elizabeth and Cassandra started looking for ways to meet emerging challenges, to be a part of the solution of future fresh food security and the long term health of the family as well as the local community.

Cassandra’s son, living in South Africa, suggested they use the existing facilities of the 16th century farm, and family home in North Devon, to become local producers of trending microgreens. The concept seemed a simple one and within months the plan had taken form and Taw Valley Microgreens was born. These tender young crops lend themselves to urban and vertical farm cultivation and since the early 1990’s the industry has spread across the world in major city centres supplying executive and celebrity chefs with microgreens.

The more we researched the more determined we became that our crops needed to be nourished and cultivated in a way that didn’t cost the Earth. An abundance of fresh air, light and good quality water plus the space to expand the business over time were all positive factors in realising our dream We realised the potential to do things differently, where possible minimising reliance on the national grid, but at the time not quite appreciating just how important this was to become for the future of food security!

Cass and Elizabeth both felt a deep desire to do their small part in aiding this recovery and hopefully inspiring a younger generation to see farming as a viable sustainable career option.  To share this microgreen growing experience with others, we now offer microgreen masterclass sessions. Contact us for more information about where and when.

Putting this all into practice is a tough learning curve, one we feel is far from over! Growing successfully all year round is a huge challenge. These tiny crops are very temperamental and any extremes play havoc with their growth and susceptibility to fungus and disease. They require vigilant round the clock care, not unlike babies.

However over-riding all these factors is our family’s’ passion for nature and wildlife. Since the purchase the 5 acre property in 2007 our dream was to help restore a natural balance and allow space for Nature’s recovery. Today the surrounding meadows that once were pasture land for grazing sheep and cattle, are a sanctuary for a bio-diverse ecosystem. From wildflower meadows to an ancient woodland and a mini wetland that perhaps once served as a natural flood defence system off the steeply sloping valley down into the river Taw. It’s been an incredibly exciting journey and a privilege observing how nature finds harmony and balance with just a little help from caring human-kind.

This we hope is a microcosm of what nature friendly farming looks like and we feel passionately about sharing this good news and our organically grown sustainable super-foods, with local communities. Our memberships and business partnership of the UNESCO North Devon Biosphere, Nature Friendly Farming Network and FOOD DRINK DEVON has helped us fine tune our mission and establish core values that supply a road map for our development and growth.

We love sharing all the health benefits we’ve experienced by adding microgreens to our diet. From the way we incorporate them in our meals to the fresh veggie juice we’ve become seriously reliant on for vitality and wellbeing. Come join our growing Taw Tribe today!
